Born Rolihlahla Mandela on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. “Rolihlahla” in the language of Xhosa literally means “pulling the branch of the tree,” or “one who shakes the tree.” He was the first in his family to attend school, and due to the British educational system in South Africa, his teacher gave him his new first name of “Nelson.” Today on his birthday, Nelson Mandela is being honored throughout the world. In 1933, Mandela shared the Nobel Prize for Peace with former President F.W. de Klerk for their work towards dismantling apartheid. At age 77 he was inaugurated as the country’s first black president on May 10, 1994, and in 1995 he was awarded the Order of Merit. He retired from active politics in 1999, but continued raising money to build schools and clinics in South Africa’s rural heartland. Mandela published a number of books on his life and struggle, among them, No Easy Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela: The Struggle is My Life, his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, which was secretly written while in prison, and Nelson Mandela’s Favorite African Folktales. Mandela is also committed to the fight against AIDS, a disease that killed his son, in 2005.
Eighteen is the number of the humanitarian. Born with a heart as big as an ocean and a love just as boundless and impersonal. If this is your birthday number your devotion to your loved ones is great and you would sacrifice everything for them. You are independent and headstrong. You like to do things yourself rather than depend on someone else. Throughout your life others will look to you for guidance. You are sympathetic, compassionate and have a great depth of understanding. You are born fighters and will not tolerate an injustice, standing up for yourself as well as for others. In your life you will take long journeys and experience many changes.
Nelson Mandela is all of the above and more. A great humanitarian, and an extraordinary inspirational human being.
May you always be surrounded with love. Ms Numbers
